This is a Heavy Band! Comprised of only four musicians, [Mick Abrahams, Jack Lancaster, Andy Pyle, and Ron Berg] they produce a huge sound.
The heart and soul is the blues but from there the band takes off for the stratosphere.
Mick Abrahams provides sonic guitar and deep gutsy vocals complemented by Jack Lancaster on saxophones.
Lancaster sounds at times like an entire brass section. The pounding rhythm section [Andy Pyle, bass and Ron Berg drums] which is subtle as a jackhammer, really drives this juggernaut.
This is a record for lovers of blues-rock, straight ahead jazz, jazz rock fusion,
and some really inspired guitar jamming.
It was great music in 1969, and it's still a terrific listen in 2008!
Gatefold cover has Mick's extensive liner notes inside.
This album is not an extension of Ahead Rings Out. Getting to This is much quieter. It has a parcel of fine songs. Most of Jack Lancaster's playing sounds like a post bop Blue Note Blowing session from the 1960's
Mick does some stunning slide guitar,
and demonstrates his great vocal range, while the band really cooks.
This is a really nice companion piece to Ahead Rings Out, but there's plenty to admire on this record by itself. We give a hearty recommendation to both.
There's a good looking gatefold with the band on the cover.
